Italy: students protest against rent prices

Italy: students protest against rent prices – (franceinfo)

In Italy, students decided to pitch tents in front of the country’s major universities. They denounce rents that are too high and a lack of space in student residences.

With three people on the same desk, it’s difficult for students not to get distracted. There are six of them sharing an apartment in the Italian capital. But for this sociology student, it’s a successful start to the school year. For years, for almost 400 euros per month, she had to settle for a room very far from her university: “It took me an hour and a half every morning to get to class. It was difficult for me to follow the lessons.”

Exploding rents

Like her, in Italy, one in three students struggles to find accommodation. 430 euros per room on average, too expensive. A budget that explodes in certain cities: 600 euros in Rome, Milan or Bologna. So, for several months in front of universities across the country, students have been planting their aunts as a symbol of protest. They are demanding frozen rents and more places in student residences.
