Drought is affecting more and more regions. In Charente-Maritime, the prefect took drastic new restrictions this week. The situation is very worrying for farmers, especially grain growers.

Like every day, Sébastien Brochet discovers the damage of the drought in his fields. Its pea pods are few and the grains smaller. Same observation of drought on his corn plants. Still, he was right to rejoice. Wheat prices have never been so high. The good prospect of return is destroyed. “Despite the influx of the cost of inputs, we could get out a little money whereas today it will not cover the costs”, believes Sébastien Brochet, grain breeder. With the irrigation restrictions, the farmer is deprived of irrigation.

In Dompierre-sur-Mer (Charente-Maritime), Mathieu Dorin has no water source or irrigation system. He will have “two tons less yield compared to other years”, says the farmer. Sébastien and Julie Brochet had planned to develop their breeding activity, but the lack of hay and straw could slow down their project.
