The driver had hit a baby who was in a stroller being carried by a Hasidic woman in the area.
He continued on his way without stopping. No one had been injured.
According to what the SPVM confirmed to TVA Nouvelles, the man was identified and met by the investigators.
The latter asked the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) to suspend his licence.
“The case will be submitted to the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP), who will determine whether to file charges,” says the Montreal Police Service.
Not a hate crime
In addition, the police confirm that “the facts have shown that it was not a hate crime”.
“The Jewish community is relieved to learn that the November hit-and-run in Outremont involving a Jewish lady and child, where fortunately no one was injured, was not an expression of hatred or anti-Semitism, as had been speculated on social media,” the Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) and Federation CJA (FCJA) said in a statement.
“With the rise of anti-Semitism, vigilance remains essential. The FCJA Community Safety Director will continue to work with the SPVM to protect the safety of Montreal’s Jewish community and to assess and monitor any threats to the community.”
