“It’s time for me to start a new chapter.” Olympique de Marseille striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang announced on Wednesday July 17 his departure from the Marseille club at the end of a season in which he was his team’s top scorer (30 goals in all competitions). “I have had a year full of emotions and I would like to thank the entire club, the staff, my teammates and our supporters. You have made me stronger and these memories with you will remain engraved forever”wrote the 35-year-old Gabonese international on Instagram.
Arriving on a free transfer last summer from Chelsea, the former Stéphanois led the Marseille club during a disappointing 2023-2024 season, which ended in an anonymous 8th place in Ligue 1. During the Marseille team’s good run in the Europa League, he also became the top scorer in the history of the competition (34 goals). While he thanks the owner of the Olympic team, Frank McCourt, and its president, Pablo Longoria, for “having accepted [son] departure”, “Aubam” has not yet revealed his future destination. Among the leads being considered to replace him on the Canebière, the name of Mason Greenwood, accused of domestic violence before the charges were dropped, is causing some to grind their teeth.
