Strike notice: two terminals at the Port of Montreal could be paralyzed next week

Two terminals at the Port of Montreal could be paralyzed next week, as the Union of Longshoremen of the Port of Montreal filed a 72-hour strike notice on Friday morning which could lead to a walkout starting Monday morning.

In a press release, the union confirmed that it had sent its strike notice at 7 a.m. Friday morning, so its members could stop work as of 7 a.m. Monday.

In the event of a strike, it would last three days, until 6:59 a.m. next Thursday. The union specifies that the strike would only affect the two terminals of the Termont Montreal company.

Representatives of the Union of Longshoremen of the Port of Montreal are to hold a press conference later Friday to provide an update on the negotiations.

Earlier this week, the 1,150 longshoremen at the port of Montreal refused the latest global employer offer from the Maritime Employers’ Association, by 99.63%. They also gave themselves a strike mandate.

On Tuesday, the negotiating committee and the executive committee of the local section of the Canadian Union of Public Employees recommended that the longshoremen reject the offer.

The collective agreement for dock workers at the Port of Montreal expired on December 31.
