Strike at the St. Lawrence Seaway: Unifor and the employer in mediation

The large pan-Canadian union Unifor and the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation are in mediation starting this Friday.

The parties are brought together in the company of the federal mediation service, in the hope of finding a settlement to the conflict which is paralyzing the St. Lawrence seaway, from Montreal to Niagara, via the locks.

Five local sections of the Unifor union, two in Quebec and three in Ontario, launched the strike last Sunday, after voting in favor of such a mandate in a proportion of 99%.

Salary is the main point in dispute.

Since then, several parties have intervened in the matter, starting with the prime ministers of Quebec and Ontario, François Legault and Doug Ford, who invited the federal government to intervene if mediation does not make it possible to quickly reach a settlement. regulation.

Earlier this week, Quebec Grain Producers asked to allow grain ships to circulate. The employer had made a request to this effect from the start of the strike.

Also, business associations have urged the parties to resolve the conflict, which has significant financial repercussions.
