On Saturday, a young mother who was breastfeeding her four-month-old baby was stopped by an Eaton Center security officer who told her to breastfeed in a room reserved for this purpose.

No, this is not old news found in the archives of The Press. This incredible intervention took place in 2022.

Both the security guard and her supervisor made it clear to the young woman that breastfeeding in public was not tolerated. As if breastfeeding were an indecent act!

We could console ourselves by saying that this is an isolated case, as the Eaton Center asserts, but if we trust the testimonies of several mothers, this type of intervention occurs more often than we believe him, at the Eaton Center and elsewhere.

This question was thought to have been settled long ago. That this right recognized by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms would no longer be called into question. But no ! There are still obtuse minds who say that breastfeeding is a “private” act that should not be done in broad daylight. Some feel uncomfortable because they give it a sexual connotation.

A quick reminder: masturbation is an intimate sexual act and that is why it is not tolerated in public. Breastfeeding is a necessity, a natural gesture that is part of life and that threatens no one. Let mothers nurse in peace!
