Message to the mayors of Brampton, Calgary, Toronto and all Canadian cities who are pulling out their checkbooks in support of opponents of the Law on the secularism of the State : keep your taxpayer’s money for your municipal services. You are here far, very far, from your fields of competence.

Basically, you are right: this law on religious symbols is a fire that burns for nothing. A fire started by the Legault government which divides society and circumvents the charters of rights and freedoms… without it being demonstrated that a serious or pressing problem justifies it. Except all you’re doing right now is adding fuel to this fire. It only deflects opinions.

The debate around religious symbols is already very emotional. It pits people against each other on the basis of their convictions, their values, their vision of society. Its transformation into a battle of English Canada against French-speaking Quebec unfortunately increases the level of emotionalism and incomprehension. The slippage takes us away from the real questions and serves all those who instrumentalize the chicane. We now know the positions of each camp. We can only hope that the tone will come down.
