The United States has been hit by numerous tornadoes in recent weeks. Nearly 400 were recorded in April, causing five deaths and considerable damage. Dozens of homes are without electricity.
The United States is in peak tornado season, from Texas to North Dakota. They decimated the trees and killed at least five people. On the sides of the roads, vehicles are overturned. Hundreds of homes were destroyed. Tuesday, May 7, in Michigan, a tornado devastated a logistics warehouse where employees were located. The structure collapsed. Luckily, none of the employees were seriously injured.
A record
According to specialists, it is difficult to say that the number of tornadoes is increasing because of global warming. But this season coincides with the El Niño phenomenon, which warms the water and the atmosphere. “Toward the end of El Niño, there may be an increase in conditions favorable for tornado formation. This is thought to have to do with El Niño changing the dynamics of the atmosphere.”, explains Fabio D’Andrea, climatologist at the Pierre-Simon Laplace Institute. Nearly 400 tornadoes were observed in the United States in April 2024, a record that had not been reached in 13 years.
