Storm in New Brunswick | Thousands of people still without electricity

Just under 50,000 people were still without power in New Brunswick early Wednesday morning, after strong winds battered Canada’s east coast this week.

The teams are working 24 hours a day, helping to reduce the total number of people without electricity, which was more than 100,000 the day before.

Authorities have warned that it could take days for power to return in some areas.

In Nova Scotia, some 7,000 people remained in the dark, while a handful of outages remained in Newfoundland.

The storm, which began late Sunday and continued through Monday and Tuesday, was the result of a low-pressure system and a massive high-pressure system colliding in the Atlantic Ocean, creating a slow-moving storm accompanied by strong winds.

Environment Canada says 60 to 120 millimeters of rain could fall in parts of eastern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton by Thursday morning. “Significant snowfall” is also forecast later.

Parts of western Newfoundland could see 50 to 100 millimeters of rain, with up to 200 millimeters inland and mountainous areas.

Snowfall of up to 50 centimeters is also expected later this week.
