In France, storm Diego caused a lot of damage on Saturday April 9. Another 6,000 homes are without electricity this evening, mainly in the Southwest. In Corsica, firefighters are trying to fight violent fires.
On the night of April 8 to 9 in Lorraine, the inhabitants had to be evacuated urgently because of the Diego storm which caused heavy rainfall causing several rivers to overflow. “I’ve never seen this, it’s been eight years since we came back“, a surprised resident. The water rose very quickly and the streams turned into torrents. The equivalent of a month of rain fell in a few hours without causing any casualties. 600 km away, 9,000 homes are without electricity in the Limousin after the storm. Uprooted trees broke some lines. Despite the interventions, this evening of April 9, 6,000 homes remain without electricity in the southwest.
In Corsica, a fire in the middle of April was fanned by gusts of wind up to 120km/h. The terrain being steep, access conditions are difficult. In 24 hours, the flames therefore covered more than 100 hectares. “There are quite a few hot spots that can reactivate and perhaps start the fire again.”explains Hervé Aldobrandicommander of operations.
