During the riots following Nahel’s death, several signs were looted. The resale of the stolen merchandise began on Wednesday, July 5.

On social networks, images showing looters loaded with new clothes or still packed phones proliferated during the riots. Scenes of looting have been observed all over France and the loot is partly found on the Internet. On encrypted messaging, state-of-the-art smartphones are offered, but also hundreds of mortars to equip the rioters.

Accounts with fake profiles

On Leboncoin and Vinted, ads at unbeatable prices are also published. Telephones are sold for a few hundred euros instead of 1000 for some. Half-price branded sneakers are offered. Often these accounts have no ratings, are registered under false names. “You only have to do a simple Google search to see that the profile picture is fake”, explains Jérémie Laurent-Kaysen, journalist at the service of the Révélateurs de France Télévisions. Online resale platforms claim to be vigilant.
