Wool stocks are overflowing on French farms. While it was exported almost entirely to Asia for processing, everything stopped in 2020 with the collapse of the market caused by Covid.

In French farms, tons of wool are piled up every year. All over our country, stocks are overflowing. In the Tarn, as at the start of spring, shearing is a must for Ludovic Chamayou and his flock of sheep. An intense morning of work to recover 800 kilos of wool without any value. Because for four years, all of Ludovic Chamayou’s stocks have been rotting behind his farm.

A whole industry is trying to be reborn in Aveyron

For years, French wool was exported almost entirely to Asia for processing. But in 2020, everything stopped. With Covid, the market collapsed, and opportunities disappeared for thousands of breeders. In Aveyron, an entire industry is trying to revive. In Camarès, a year ago, a spinning mill even opened its doors. Allied with a group of breeders, Jean-Philippe Lignon, general director of Filature Colbert, invested in a second-hand production line to relaunch an activity which almost disappeared.
