With a total of 288 million trips in 2023, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) notes a 21% increase in ridership in its network compared to 2022.
The public carrier unveiled its Activity Report for the year 2023 on Thursday, marked in particular by an increase in customers in its networks.
“This increase is explained, among other things, by the return of teleworkers to face-to-face work, by the resumption of tourism and by the Free 65 and over system,” explains the STM, which nevertheless mentions that remote working continues to reduce the frequency trips for several.
The public carrier’s ridership still reached nearly 80% of the pre-pandemic level at the end of the year. New figures which now place the STM third among transport companies in terms of ridership in Canada and the United States and in second position for its metro network, according to the public transport company, which relies on data from the American Public Transportation Association.
More comments and complaints
As a result of this increase in traffic on its network, the public carrier also reports a 10% increase in the number of comments and complaints filed compared to 2022.
In total, nearly 38,000 complaints were processed, according to the transport company. A good one that she attributes to the “increasingly complex social context [qui] had an impact on customers’ feeling of security, particularly in the metro.”
To address the concerns of its users, the STM highlights having added a cohort of 20 new special constables in the field and created the function of security ambassadors dedicated to customers.
