STM in 2021 | 44.2% of pre-pandemic attendance returned

The STM published its 2021 activity report on Thursday. Here are some key elements that stand out.

This is the number of trips made by the STM in 2021, which represents 44.2% of the affluence recorded in 2019. As everywhere in the world, Montréal’s public transport network reported a sharp drop in attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of telecommuting, but things had improved by the end of the year. “A peak at 60% – the highest level ever measured since the start of the crisis – was observed at the beginning of December 2021, just before the Omicron wave broke”, notes the STM.

Quiet at Berri-UQAM station

The busiest station in the network, and the only one through which three of the four metro lines pass, the Berri-UQAM station recorded 4.2 million entries in 2021, while the station reported 12.6 million admissions per year before the pandemic.

This is the proportion of STM employees from visible, ethnic and Aboriginal minorities, a proportion that rises to 43.5% when only those hired in 2021 are taken into account. “With 10,708 workers, the STM is one of the ten largest employers in Quebec. It is also a leader in diversity,” notes the Company.

This is the satisfaction rate of STM users in 2021, an increase of 5 percentage points compared to the results of the previous year. Overall, the number of complaints about the bus network decreased by 10% compared to 2020, while complaints about the metro network fell by 17%. However, the STM reports a 13% increase in complaints in the “other” category, which concern in particular the issuance of the student OPUS card, requests to add or move bus shelters, and maintenance problems. or even major works such as the renovation of stations.

30,000 Mobility Squad interventions

Also Thursday, the City of Montreal unveiled the 2021 results of the Mobility Squad, this squad established in 2018 with the aim of ensuring the fluidity of travel on major arteries. The City reports that the Escouade carried out nearly 30,000 interventions in 2021. “Since 2021, the Escouade has been mobilized 7 days a week and has more staff on the ground,” the report notes.

This is the number of fines issued in 2021 for obstacles to mobility in the public space by the 16 inspectors of the Mobility Squad. The inspectors carried out the demobilization of 3,878 unauthorized obstacles, in addition to intervening on 12,591 occasions to remove or move non-compliant elements obstructing the roadway. “It should be noted that 89% of problematic situations were resolved the same day,” underlines the City.

School zones and heavy trucks

For 2022, Mobility Squad inspectors plan to carry out more frequent actions in school zones, target pedestrian corridors near construction sites and pay greater attention to heavy truck traffic in areas where their attendance is prohibited in Montreal.
