Martinique: still no agreement between the State and the demonstrators

In Martinique, riots broke out to fight against the high cost of living. Despite negotiations between the two camps, no agreement is in sight.

Heavily equipped police officers were deployed, and residents were ordered to stay at home. If the night remained calm in Martinique, it is above all thanks to the establishment of a curfew. At the negotiating table tonight, there is still no agreement between the state and the protesters. Food in Martinique costs 40% more than in mainland France, and local unions are therefore calling for price alignment with the continent. An effort that manufacturers and the government do not want to make at the moment. “We cannot make all the products“, indicates food industrialist Robert Perfect.

This disagreement has now lasted for four days, during which the island went up in flames. Three people died in clashes with the police and 26 police officers and gendarmes were injured. Today, the extent of the damage on the island is considerable. To maintain order, the State decided to send the CRS-8 as reinforcements, a unit created to fight against urban violence.
