Steven Guilbeault will submit his greenhouse gas reduction plan

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault will table a new plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Parliament on Tuesday morning.

The plan is a legal requirement under the Carbon Neutral Accountability Act the Liberals passed last year.

It will model emissions projections for different sectors that are feasible and necessary to meet Canada’s current goal of reducing emissions to no more than 60% of what they were in 2005 by the end of the decade.

The plan was to be filed at the end of December, but Mr. Guilbeault took advantage of a clause allowing him to request three more months.

He says Canadians will see something in the plan they’ve never seen before: a roadmap to achieve a climate goal.

Canada has released at least 11 plans and set nine different emissions targets since 1988, but has never met a single one.
