At just 16, Stephen Gogolev has already started making his mark at the senior level with a victory for the men on Friday at the 2022 Skate Canada Challenge in Regina, SK.
“I felt pretty confident,” the Torontonian said in a statement following this national competition. I had more time to work on aspects of the program. I could add an element or two to the nationals, if I’m comfortable. “
Gogolev won Friday’s short program and free skate with 235.47 points. British Columbian Aleksa Rakic, who turned 17 in September, followed with 205.06. Corey Circelli, 19, of Toronto moved from ninth place after the short program to third at 201.33.
“I think tonight has been a big step for Stephen,” said Gogolev coach Lee Barkell. It was his first time competing in front of Canadian judges again and it’s a great springboard for the national championships in January. ”
Quebecers in the spotlight
As a couple, Quebecer Maxime Deschamps and his partner Deanna Stellato-Dudek won the gold medal with 176.83 points followed by Lori-Ann Matte and Thierry Ferland, with 162.97. Ontarians Patricia Andrew and Steven Adcock were third at 156.18.
Remember that the Skate Canada Challenge is a qualifying event for novice, junior and senior skaters, in view of the 2022 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships, which will take place in Ottawa from January 6 to 13, 2022.
