And five for Stéphanie Frappart! The French referee was named for the fifth consecutive year the best female referee in the world by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (FIHFS), Wednesday January 3. With 116 points, the one who in 2022 became the first woman to officiate during a men’s World Cup final phase match, is ahead of the American Tori Penso (99 points), referee of the 2023 Women’s World Cup final. Welshwoman Cheryl Foster (54 points) completes the podium.
A pioneer in her field by being the first woman to be the main referee of a Ligue 1 match (Amiens-Strasbourg, April 28, 2019) then the Champions League (Juventus-Dynamo Kiev, December 2, 2020), Stéphanie Frappart is getting closer, with this fifth coronation in a row, to the absolute record, established by Pierluigi Collina. Between 1998 and 2003, the Italian obtained six consecutive FIHFS awards.
For men, it’s the Pole Szymon Marciniak, referee of the final of the last World Cup who imposed himself. The French Clément Turpin (third) and François Letexier (sixth) entered the top 10.
