8 million vehicles could contain defective airbags worldwide. After Citroën and DS, other brands in the Stellantis group, such as Opel, could be impacted.
Deprived of his car since mid-May, the owner of a Citroën C3 recalled by the brand for safety reasons came to collect a loaner vehicle. The cause: the airbags in his vehicle. Deteriorated by heat and humidity, they can be dangerous by projecting metal fragments into the air during an accident. So far, 240,000 vehicles have been recalled by Citroën. But this could rise to 1.4 million in France for Citroën, DS, and Opel, all owned by Stellantis. Citroën had however affirmed that there would be no new models involved.
On the morning of Friday June 7, the automobile manufacturers’ regulatory body accused Stellantis of having known as early as December that nearly 8 million cars worldwide were affected by this airbag problem. A lawyer brings together the complaints of several dozen Citroën owners. “We criticize Stellantis for continuing to equip their vehicles, selling them, not informing the public and not having implemented a correction since at least 2017”, summarizes Me Christophe Léguevaques. Stellantis indicates that it is continuing its tests on its vehicles and will carry out new recalls if necessary.
