A little over a year ago, Laurence Nerbonne received the proposal to write a song for “Star Académie”, with certain specifications.

“I like challenges, she rejoiced in the interview. I also really like pop, it’s my hobby. “Star Académie” is associated with several memories in Quebec, it is something quite epic, grandiose and unifying.

So she left with the idea of making a song that brings people together and speaks of hope. “We are all in a period where we need change, because we have stagnated quite a bit for two years. There is also a lot of positive in the new generation, and I tried to represent the direction that Quebec music should take in the coming years, something unifying, positive and open to difference. This is how the idea of ”Change the world” was born.

Co-author

The text of the song was written with four hands by Laurence Nerbonne and Marie-Élaine Thibault. “It’s a funny story because Marie-Élaine is my manager. By the time the proposal arrived, I had a lot on my agenda and wasn’t sure I had time. I finally accepted, telling her that she had to help me write the text. So we both really worked on that. She doesn’t usually write a song, but she still oversees everything I release. She’s familiar with the creative process, it’s nothing new to her.”

As it will be interpreted by the Academicians in opening of the Variétés, the song was thought and built in this direction.

“I imagined it with several people singing it, and also so that everyone had their own personality, their own story, and that in the end, all these stories were alike. We realize that we all have the same joys, the same sorrows, the same emotions… We all experience somewhat the same things. And at a time when society is very divided, it’s “fun” to see young people who sing this song, despite their differences, and who find themselves in a kind of community.

Two Versions

As revealed by Jean-Philippe Dion, the producer of “Star Académie”, the song has a normal version and another with a rap passage.

“There is indeed a part where the lyrics are more rhythmic, confirmed the singer-songwriter. I will also interfere with the candidates, this Sunday, to sing the complete version with them.

Being the first woman to write the credits for a show like “Star Académie” is a source of pride that crowns years of hard work for Laurence Nerbonne.

“I worked a lot on the composition and production of my albums. There are still few female directors, beatmakers or producers, and it was important for me to achieve that. It’s a big accomplishment, because I always try to make songs that touch the audience. I now hope that people will like this song”, she concluded with humility.
