The 25-year-old Russian won her fifth trophy on the WTA circuit, after those won in Charleston (2017), Moscow (2018), Melbourne and Saint Petersburg last year.

It deprived Rogers, 28, of a first title for his third final, after those, already lost, in Bad Gastein in Austria in 2014 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

The American, however, held on in the first act, managing to erase two breaks conceded, to come back to 5-5 having saved a set point in the process. In the aftermath, she was the most solid in the decisive game.

Frustrated to find herself behind when she seemed to be in control, Kasatkina then raised her level of play, unlike Rogers who was dropping.

The Russian, who had firmly dismissed tournament favorite Paula Badosa the day before, took 1 hour 16 minutes to win the next two rounds, the same time taken to lose the first round.
