In the last few days, images of Montreal police officers wearing crests adorned with a maple leaf crossed out with a thin blue line (the “Thin Blue Line”) have emerged on social networks. This symbol of support for law enforcement is banned by some Canadian police forces. He is criticized by left-wing activists.
“I am very uncomfortable with some police officers who choose to wear this symbol, because it is a divisive symbol. Which divides Montrealers,” said Valérie Plante. “At the moment, the SPVM is reviewing the code [qui encadre] wearing the uniform and those are the kinds of things that need to be looked at to make sure the wearing of the uniform is inclusive. »
“The uniform must reassure the entire population,” added the mayor.
The wearing of a patch bearing this symbol is notably prohibited by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
