The moratorium on the closure of neighborhood police stations of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) was renewed on Tuesday by the city council of Montreal.

The decision, passed unanimously, is a response to police chief Sylvain Caron. He spoke at the beginning of January of his desire to change the police model that prevails in Montreal.
The elected municipal officials want “that the City of Montreal respect the decision of the municipal council to have imposed a moratorium on any decision to close, merge or integrate neighborhood police stations and mandate the Commission de la sécurité publique to hold a consultation public,” reads the adopted motion.
This is a proposal from the official opposition, amended by the Plante administration.
“A public consultation must be at the heart of a police force coverage plan,” the motion further states. “The concept of community policing is based in particular on the notion of geographical responsibility, which consists in respecting the natural boundaries of neighborhoods. »
