Russia: spring military conscription a source of concern in the context of the war in Ukraine
(France 2)
In Russia, like every year, the authorities are currently summoning young people of age to carry out their military service. The Kremlin wants to mobilize 150,000. Since the war in Ukraine, spring military conscription has raised more concerns among young Russians.
It is one of the information of the week on Russian television: spring military conscription. Young people over the age of 18 are called up for military service. It’s the same thing every year, but since the war in Ukraine, conscription has raised more concerns, to the point that the army has sought to reassure young people and their families. “Soldiers doing military service will not participate in the special military operation and will not be deployed to new Russian regions”assured a Russian official.
“The subject remains very sensitive in Russia”
The age limit has been raised to 30 years, compared to 27 years previously. The army hopes to conscript 150,000 young people into military service, which lasts one year. She hope also that during this period, some will agree to sign to come back. “In the fall of 2022, the authorities mobilized 300,000 men intended to go to the front, and since then, the rumor of a new mobilization has come up regularly. Each time, the authorities deny it, but the subject remains very sensitive in Russia”indicates Anne Ponsinet, journalist from France Télévisions Moscow.
