Sports minister accuses Liverpool of ‘leaving supporters in the wild’

Of the “plural responsibilities”, and therefore flaws at all levels. Invited in the morning of RTL, Monday, May 30, the Minister of Sports, the Olympic and Paralympic Games returned to the serious incidents which delayed the kick-off of the Champions League final between Real Madrid in Liverpool (1 -0), Saturday, at the Stade de France.

Before holdinga meeting at the Ministry of Sports with the organizers, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, UEFA and the town hall of Saint-Denis, to take stock of malfunctions, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra has already drawn the first conclusions. Among the causes that would have led to this situation, the Minister cites “certainly a lack of stewards at the level of what had been planned by the French Football Federation, a problem of cramped control areas”.

Amelie Oudea-Castera also points the finger at the English club, believing that it has failed, unlike the Madrid institution. “The fact that the Real club has supervised the coming of its supporters to Paris to such an extent (…) which contrasts radically with what the Liverpool club has done, which has left its supporters in the wild, has makes a difference major,” she explained..

Asked about the number of English spectators without sesame, the minister cited the figure of “30 to 40,000 people” with “fake tickets” Where “without ticket”. “We’re going to watch it all”, she added. Amélie Oudéa-Castéra further confirmed that Liverpool had asked UEFA – who agreed – not to use the mobile app but to use paper tickets, “a circuit (…) which created overflows”.

Above all, the brand new minister judged “that the most regrettable dimension of what happened” was the use of tear gas against families and children who came to watch the final. As many major sporting events loom in France – Rugby World Cup 2023, Olympic and Paralympic Games 2024 – Amélie Oudéa-Castéra says she is not “worry” : France is “capable of organizing very large sporting events”taking the example of the Tour de France or Euro 2016.

“I am very committed, very concerned that we learn absolutely all the lessons from what happened on Saturday evening to optimize everything that needs to be done in anticipation of the 2023 Rugby World Cup and the Olympic and Paralympic Games. 2024”, she further clarified.
