LOS ANGELES | “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, the latest installment in the adventures of the spider-man, has remained firmly attached to the head of the North American box office by raking in $ 52.7 million over the weekend, according to provisional figures published on Sunday by Exhibitor Relations, a firm specializing in the film industry.
The film, the first of the Covid era to raise more than a billion dollars since its release, brought a breath of fresh air to a film industry which is struggling to recover from the terrible blow caused by the pandemic.
The superhero is played there by British actor Tom Holland. The previous episodes, where the red and blue suit was worn by Tobey Maguire then Andrew Garfield, had also broken the house at the box office.
As families begin to return to theaters, the animated film “Tous en Scène 2” took second place with $ 19.6 million earned between Friday and Sunday.
The third, “The King’s Man”, was far behind, with just $ 4.5 million in revenue. A prequel to the “Kingsman” spy films, the film brings together actors Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton and Rhys Ifans.
“American Underdog” followed closely behind, with nearly $ 4.1 million raised. It is based on the memoir of Kurt Warner, a young man who rose from the shelves of a grocery store to the status of American football superstar.
In fifth place was “Matrix Resurrections,” $ 3.8 million in revenue. A “disastrous” performance according to Variety, given its budget of $ 190 million.
The rest of the Top 10:
“West Side Story” (2.1 million)
“Ghostbusters: The Legacy” (1.4 million)
“Licorice Pizza” (1.25 million)
“A Journal for Jordan” (1.2 million)
“Encanto” (1.1 million)
