(Calgary) The Netherlands continued their medal haul at the long track speed skating World Cup in Calgary on Friday.


The Dutch won 12 medals, including five gold, at the first of two consecutive World Cups in Calgary last week.

They added four medals to their total, including two gold, on the first day at the Olympic Oval.

Kjeld Nuis in the men’s 1,500 meters and Irene Schouten in the women’s 5,000 meters won gold for the Netherlands.

Nuis skated the distance in 1:42.59 to edge American Jordan Stolz by 60 hundredths of a second. Dutchman Thomas Krol finished third (1:43.34).

Connor Howe recorded the best Canadian result of this event, with a ninth position. His compatriots Tyson Langelaar (15e) and Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu (16e) also participated in this race.

Schouten had the best in front of the Norwegian Ragne Wiklund. Canadian Ivanie Blondin won the bronze medal in the 5,000 metres.

Canadians Valérie Maltais and Isabelle Weidemann respectively took sixth and seventh place. Maltais also achieved a personal high.

Quebecers Laurent Dubreuil, Christopher Fiola and Gélinas-Beaulieu teamed up under the Canadian banner to win the bronze medal in the sprint event.

The three skaters, who posted a time of 1:19.40, were beaten by Poland (1:18.90) and the Netherlands (1:18.93).

In the women’s 500 meters, South Korean Min-Sun Kim won the gold medal ahead of Japanese Miho Takagi and American Erin Jackson.

The only Canadian to take part in this event, Carolina Hiller crossed the finish line in a time of 37.85 seconds, which earned her a 14e square.
