(ALMATY) Canada’s Courtney Sarault won gold in the 1,500-metre event on Saturday at the short track speed skating World Cup stop in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
In Final A, Sarault, from Moncton, New Brunswick, covered the distance in two minutes 33.691 seconds, a time that put her ahead of Belgian Hanne Desmet (2:33.799).
Canadian Renee Marie Steenge (2:56,983) finished second in Final B while Claudia Gagnon failed to complete her race in this final.
The Canadian skaters completed this second day of activities of the weekend with a second medal, that of Quebecer Steven Dubois in the 500 meters.
The Terrebonne athlete stopped the clock at 41,153 seconds, or 49 thousandths of a second behind Pole Diane Sellier. Canadian Maxime Laoun (41,720) ranked first in Final B.
In other finals on Saturday, Quebec’s Pascal Dion (2:15,931) finished fifth in the 1,500 metres, two places ahead of his compatriot Félix Roussel (2:17,757). William Dandjinou (2:31,845) finished first in Final B.
In the women’s 500 metres, the Canadian delegation had to settle for first and second places for Danaë Blais (44,274) and Rikki Doak (44,298) in Final B.
Sherbrooke’s Kim Boutin was penalized during her heat of the semi-finals and did not qualify for either of the two finals.
In the mixed relay, Gagnon, Laoun, Roussel and Steenge finished first in Final B in 2:41,962.
The women’s 3,000-metre relay and the men’s 5,000-metre relay quartets earned their tickets to the finals, which will take place on Sunday.
Finals over 500 meters and 1000 meters, for both men and women, are also on the program for Sunday.
