The leader of the Conservative Party of Canada Pierre Poilievre calls for the withdrawal of the appointment of Amira Elghawaby as special representative for the fight against Islamophobia in Canada, because of her “anti-Quebec” remarks, against the “Jewish people” and against “police”.
In a post on social media on Saturday morning, Mr. Poilievre claimed that “Justin Trudeau has again insulted Quebeckers, Jews and police officers. He did it by appointing someone to a very important position in the government who had made anti-Quebec statements. »
In a video of just over a minute and a half, the Conservative leader does not directly name Mme Elghawaby, but directly requests the withdrawal of his nomination.
Let us recall that the appointment this week of Mme Elghawaby raises controversy. This ex-journalist had notably denounced the Islamophobia of Quebecers in a column published in theOttawa Citizen, July 11, 2019.
On Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invited her to “clarify her thinking”.
“She made Quebec-bashing with these remarks, reiterates Mr. Poilievre in his public outing. She made comments against the Jewish people, and the Israeli people. And finally, she insulted the police. It is not by appointing such a person to a position that we will be able to unite the country. »
