The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television has announced the winners of its Special Awards, a precursor to the annual week-long party honoring the best in Canadian television and film.
Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Netflix’s young comedy star Never Have I Ever, will receive the Radius Award for having “radiated internationally”, while Bob Cole will receive a lifetime achievement award.
Former CBC host and Inuk media personality Rassi Nashalik will receive the Gordon Sinclair Award for Spoken Journalism, while production managers Vince Commisso of 9 Story Media Group and John Galway of Corrib Entertainment will be recognized for their impact on the growth of the Canadian media industry.
This year, the Agent of Change Award is given to individuals in the media who have drawn attention to systemic racism and promoted equity and inclusion. The winners are TSN host and producer Kayla Grey, CBC host and playwright Amanda Parris and Kathleen Newman-Bremang, deputy director of Unbothered, Refinery29’s online community for black women.
The nominees for the Canadian Screen Awards will be announced February 15, and the awards will be presented during Canada On Screen Week, April 4-10.
