In a context of high inflation, French fruit and vegetables did not all increase. Some even cost less than a year ago, like zucchini. But the drought and the loss of certain crops could change the situation.

Despite inflation, the prices of certain French fruits and vegetables have not increased compared to last year. Some are even a little cheaper, like gariguettes, which have lost a few cents. “There hasn’t been frost already, so we will have a lot more fruit here, in our region, than in previous years”, remarks a trader on a market in Haute-Garonne. In a Parisian supermarket, customers make the same observation: the prices of fresh produce are not soaring.

Drought could push prices up

The most significant drop concerns the French zucchini, whose price per kilo has lost 47 cents. Most often, the prices are maintained or are only slightly more expensive. Cherry tomatoes, for example, only rose by 3 cents. But nothing indicates that this situation can continue. In the Pyrénées-Orientales, drought is already threatening harvests.
