A Spanish national, aged 14, died Monday after a fall during a mountain hike in Arette (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), AFP learned from the mayor and firefighters. The teenager made a “deadly fall” in the middle of the afternoon while she was hiking with her father on the Séguitte plateau, a sector of Arette located at approximately 1,000 meters above sea level, explained the department’s firefighters.

According to Pierre Casabonne, the mayor of this Béarnaise commune, the victim “slipped on a rocky ledge” in a “very accident-prone sector” and fell “about a hundred meters”, he explains to France Bleu Béarn Bigorre. “LThe hiking trail reaches the plateau without difficulty, but it is then surrounded by rocky bars. The father probably did not appreciate the dangerousness of the site. It’s horrible”detailed Mr. Casabonne.

Alerted by the panicked father, firefighters and a unit from the high mountain gendarmerie platoon from Oloron-Sainte-Marie found the body late in the afternoon. According to the mayor, the victim’s family, originally from Spain, was on vacation in the town for the Easter weekend and the mother “had remained in their lodging” during the deadly hike.
