The Spanish women’s championship will be able to resume. The players of the first division have ended their strike movement after obtaining salary increases. “An agreement between employers and unions has been reached”indicated the players’ union Futpro in a press release published very early, Thursday September 14.
This strike, called for the first two days of the championship, led to the suspension of the first day last weekend. The second, which opens on Friday with the Valencia-Real Madrid match, will finally be able to be played. The agreement signed between the players and Liga F provides “a minimum salary of 21,000 euros for the 2023/2024 season, 22,500 euros for the 2024/2025 season and 23,500 euros for the 2025/26 season”details Futpro.
But this progress “is just the beginning”warns the union, which is calling for improvements in the working conditions of players, particularly regarding leave “maternity” or to “protocol of (fight against) harassment”.
A strike launched during the Rubiales affair
“The efforts of the clubs during the negotiation contributed fundamentally to the necessary achievement of peace (social) without losing sight of the sustainable nature (economically) of the competition”, indicated for its part Liga F, which organizes the professional women’s championship. The unions demanded wages “at the height of the talent” players, some of whom were world champions with Spain, on August 20.
Last season, the first day had already had to be postponed due to a strike by referees who had finally obtained an increase in their remuneration and the creation of a fund intended to finance their retirements.
This players’ strike movement came as Spanish women’s football was plunged into chaos following the scandal of the forced kiss of the president of the Federation Luis Rubiales to the world champion Jenni Hermoso after the world coronation of the “Roja”. Rubiales ended up resigning on Sunday, while one of his close friends, the coach of the world champion women’s team, Jorge Vilda, was fired last week and replaced by his deputy Montse Tomé, who became the first woman to occupy this position in Spain.
