Thousands of dead fish in Greece. An ecological disaster is taking place in the Volos region, located northeast of Athens. Freshwater fish are washing up on the seashore, in front of stunned tourists. “We have started the operation of cleaning the seafront, the beaches, the rocks, everywhere where there are dead fish”explained Achilleas Beos, mayor of Volos. This phenomenon is a consequence of the floods last spring. A lake has re-formed and its backflow is pushing the fish towards the sea, where the salt water is fatal to them.
