(Montmeló) Briton Lando Norris took the leading position in the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix on Saturday, beating Dutchman Max Verstappen by 20 thousandths of a second in qualifying.
Norris covered the Barcelona-Catalonia circuit in 1:11.383 minutes. This is a second career pole position for the McLaren driver, who was also fastest in qualifying at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix.
After taking the lead in the first seven races of the season, Verstappen failed to do so in the last three qualifying sessions.
Britons Lewis Hamilton and George Russell allowed Mercedes to occupy the second row on the grid. The Ferraris are also pulling together with Monegasque Charles Leclerc in fifth position and Spaniard Carlos Sainz Jr. just behind.
The Frenchman Pierre Gasly (Alpine), the Mexican Sergio Perez (Red Bull), the Frenchman Esteban Ocon (Alpine) and the Australian Oscar Piastri (McLaren) followed, in order. Perez will however leave 11e due to a three-place penalty awarded at the end of the Canadian Grand Prix.
Quebecer Lance Stroll will start from 14e position. His Spanish teammate at Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso, will start 10e.
