Spanish authorities announce first death from disease

Few elements have been communicated on the medical file of this patient, while another death has been recorded in Brazil.

The Spanish Ministry of Health announced Friday, July 29 that a first death due to monkeypox had been recorded in this country. The death was caused by encephalitis associated with the infection, said health authorities in the region of Valencia, in the east of the country.

The case is still being analyzed to determine the final confirmation of the cause of death, specifies El País (in Spanish). In Spain, the country most affected by contamination in Europe, 4 298 cases have already been identified.

This is the second death outside Africa of a patient infected with monkeypox, after the death of a 41-year-old man in Brazil on Thursday. He “was followed in hospital for other serious clinical conditions died on Thursday”said the health secretariat of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais (southeast) in a press release.

“It is important to emphasize that he had serious comorbidities, so as not to cause panic in the population. Mortality (linked to this disease) remains very low”said the Secretary of Health of Minas Gerais, Fábio Baccheretti, who explained that the patient was undergoing treatment for cancer.
