After Alexia Putellas, crowned in 2021 and 2022, another Spanish player is climbing to the roof of world football. Aitana Bonmati received the 2023 Golden Ball on Monday October 30. World champion with the Spanish selection in August, the 25-year-old midfielder also won the Champions League with FC Barcelona in June.
The identity of its male counterpart will be revealed in a few minutes. The big favorite is Lionel Messi, who could receive the 8th Ballon d’Or of his career. Unless Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappé steal the show.
Earlier in the evening, Jude Bellingham won the Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best player under the age of 21. Argentinian Emiliano Martinez received the Yachine Trophy for best goalkeeper. The Gerd Müller Trophy, for top scorer, was given to Erling Haaland. Finally, Vinicius Junior received the Socrates Prize, awarded to the player engaged in societal and charitable causes, for his foundation’s involvement with underprivileged children in Brazil.
