Spain tops ‘best restaurants in the world’

This text is part of the special Pleasures notebook

For 22 years, the list World’s 50 Best Restaurants Each year, it compiles the addresses that stand out for the talent of their brigade, the philosophy of the chef and the experience in the dining room. Above all, it is an incredible showcase for the cities where they are located.

On June 5, the best chefs in the world gathered in the Encore theater at the sumptuous Wynn hotel. In a feverish, proud and united atmosphere, the camaraderie was palpable between the hundreds of hats present for the occasion.

Whet tourists’ appetite

Once their vacation is paid for, many will consult this list to identify establishments that stand out from the rest in the region visited. Others will actually book at the named addresses before even purchasing their plane ticket. Whether you like these lists or not, they clearly put certain destinations at the forefront for travelers looking for extraordinary culinary experiences.

This year, the Spanish emerged as big winners of the evening, with 5 restaurants among the 50 best in the world. They are already imposing themselves at the 1D2e and 4e places, awarded respectively to Disfrutar, in Barcelona, to Asador Etxebarri, in the Spanish Basque Country, and to Diverxo, in Madrid. Then, the Quique Dacosta, in Dénia, rose to 14e place, and the Aitor Arregui du Elkano, also in the Spanish Basque Country, is in 28e ranking position.

Other cities and countries that stood out in the 2024 edition of the ranking included Bangkok, Paris and Italy, with four establishments each in the ranking. Indeed, the majority of winning establishments are located in Europe, Asia and, more recently, Latin America. Only one African institution is among those nominated, La Colombe, in South Africa. Not surprisingly, no Canadian restaurant made the list again this year.

Make your place

To elucidate this mystery, we must understand how establishments are named. First of all, 1080 volunteer voters are recruited all over the world. In the fray, a third of them are chefs, another third are food journalists and the remaining third include foodies who regularly travel around the world. And where do they go to eat?

“If voters tend to visit larger cities, like New York and Paris, or destinations that have ranked well on previous lists, restaurants there are more likely to still be in the list. prize list,” explains Renée Suen. She is the first Canadian to serve as president of the Central North America region in World’s 50 Best.

She also ensures that parity between men and women is respected among voters in her region, and that they come from different communities. Each year, the organization also changes 25% of the voting group, to minimize the risk of bias and allow other voices to be expressed.

Given the way this ranking is made, everything suggests that we will need to work together to promote local talent even more. Because we, here, are taking full advantage of it and we are already very proud of it. Now is the time to spread the word to foodies around the world and invite them to come and enjoy it everywhere, at our place.
