Meryl Streep, who won three Oscars, starred in more than 60 films, gaining iconic status for roles ranging from a Nazi concentration camp survivor to an ABBA-singing mother.

She won her last Oscar in 2012 for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in Iron Woman. Before that, she had won one in 1980 for Kramer versus Kramer and another in 1983 for Sophie’s Choice.

This Princess of Asturias Prize, endowed with 50,000 euros, is one of eight prizes covering the arts, sciences and other fields that are awarded each year by the foundation named in honor of Princess Leonor, heiress of the Spanish throne.

Former winners in the arts category include American directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke and American architect Frank Gehry.
