There will therefore be a clash between Germany, host of this Euro 2024, and Spain, in the quarter-finals. La Roja qualified on Sunday June 30 by beating Georgia (4-1). However, the meeting started rather well for Willy Sagnol’s men, surprise guests of these eighths. With a low and well-built block, facing significant domination from the opponent of the day, Georgia prevented La Roja from realizing this advantage. Better still, she took advantage of a counter-attack to push defender Robin Le Normand to score against his side, and thus take the advantage.
Surprised, the Spaniards pushed, until Rodri equalized with a left-footed cross shot at the end of the first period. Fabian Ruiz then gave his team the lead with a header from a pass from Lamine Yamal, returning from the locker room. Forced to play higher, Georgia left more space which La Roja took advantage of: Nico Williams, with a strong right-footed strike, then Dani Olmo, at the end of the match, completed the Spanish superiority.
Luis de la Fuente’s players will therefore meet Germany in the quarter-finals, who qualified on Saturday at the expense of Denmark.
Relive the meeting.
