Spacing of garbage collections | “We are going towards that”, says Valérie Plante

The City of Montreal is moving towards the spacing of household waste collections (one collection every two weeks), warned Valérie Plante on Friday.

Four days after the city council approved such an initiative in Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, the mayoress of Montreal indicated that this practice was set to gain in importance in the metropolis.

“Obviously, we’re going towards that,” said M.me Plante, on the sidelines of a press conference on road safety. “We have reports that say that we throw away too much, that there is too much recycling. We have to cut at the source and I think that collecting every two weeks is a good measure to make us aware of our own consumption. »

In Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, the weekly collection of recycling and compost is maintained in order to encourage citizens to use these bins instead.

Friday, Valérie Plante did not want to come forward on a timetable for the spacing of collections at the municipal level, “but definitely we are going towards this model”.

She pointed out that the borough of Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve-controlled by its political formation-is not the first to have eliminated half of its garbage collection: the borough of Saint-Laurent-controlled by the opposition-made the same decision in 2016.
