Spacecraft may be launched from Canada

(Montreal) Private companies wishing to conquer space will soon be able to do so by taking off from Canada.

Ottawa announced Friday, at the Canadian Space Agency, that its regulatory framework will be modernized to allow the launch of spacecraft for commercial purposes on Canadian territory.

The objective is to respond, right here, to the needs and the strong demand of the private sector for launches making it possible to place in orbit various space technologies, which have become essential in multiple economic sectors.

The federal intent is to develop strict regulatory requirements, safety standards and stringent licensing conditions to govern the activity.

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra says he hopes for the emergence in Canada of such activities that will be safe, secure and environmentally sustainable.

Eventually, the federal government promises approved launches that comply with Canadian legislation and international conventions and treaties.
