The match between Southampton and Newcastle, scheduled for Sunday January 2 for the 21st day of the Premier League, has been postponed at the request of the Magpies, affected by “several cases of Covid-19 and injuries“the club announced on Friday.

The Premier League has accepted this postponement request because Newcastle do not have the minimum number of players available (thirteen outfielders and one goalkeeper). This is the second postponement in a row for Newcastle, who should have played at Everton on Thursday, and the 18th this winter following the postponement from Leicester-Norwich, which was scheduled for Saturday.
The health protocols of the English championship have been strengthened, with tests every day for players and staff, with a significant result: 103 positive cases recorded for the period from 20 to 26 December.
The Magpies, recently bought by a Saudi sovereign wealth fund, are still second to last in the Premier League, having won only one game this season.
