A pedestrian in his twenties was in critical condition Thursday evening after being hit by a motorist at an intersection in the Center-Sud. Montreal police have opened an investigation.
It was around 8:25 p.m. that the Montreal Police Service (SPVM) reported having been called to the scene of the collision, which occurred at the corner of Ontario and Frontenac streets, in the area from the Center-South.
According to initial information obtained from witnesses, the motorist was traveling north on Frontenac Street, “then at Ontario Street, he collided with the pedestrian who was at the intersection, on the north side. west,” indicated agent Jean-Pierre Brabant, spokesperson for the SPVM.
The 21-year-old victim was rushed to a hospital, where his life was feared at the very end of the evening, Mr. Brabant said.
As for him, the driver, a 61-year-old man, was not injured. He will be met by investigators to try to find out more about the circumstances leading to the collision.
A large police perimeter was set up to let investigators do their work of collecting clues. Frontenac Street was closed northbound from La Fontaine Street. Rue Ontario was closed in both directions between Rue du Havre and Rue d’Iberville.
Video tapes from surveillance cameras located near the scene could also be viewed by investigators to try to trace the exact sequence of events.
