Motorcycles may soon be banned on some steep weekend roads in Germany’s Black Forest. Experimentation is underway to limit noise pollution.
In the heart of the Black Forest (Germany), a paradise for walkers, the parade of motorcycles is annoying. German regional authorities are considering taking a drastic decision by banning two-wheelers during certain weekends. Bikers, accustomed to coming from all over the country for rides in the countryside, are upwind. “Of course we make noise, but it’s legal. Our motorcycles have passed the technical control, so it is difficult to understand“, says one of them. If the measure is decided, there would be no derogation, even for bikers residing in the region.
Violators would face fines of up to 50 euros. A ranger hopes for positive effects. “We would hear the insects better, but also the birds. It would be better for foxes, deer, roe deer“, confides Friederike Schneider. “I think that these practices no longer correspond to our time. Having fun making noise, and burning fuel”, she adds. Walkers are divided. Some traders also fear negative consequences for their trade.
