Sonic, who moves at supersonic speed, made his first appearance in 1991 in the world of video games. The dynamic character with the mocking smile was meant to be a stark contrast to Nintendo’s plumber Mario, who then dominated the industry. Sega’s blue mascot passed its cinematic appearance two years ago with flying colors. The first film starring her, launched shortly before the start of the pandemic, ranks first among video game film adaptations in the United States, despite its shortened theatrical presentation. He is ahead Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Uncharted and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
Back at his post, director Jeff Fowler uses the same themes in this sequel, which once again mixes animation and live action. The story picks up shortly after where it left off. Sonic is equally hyperactive and full of good intentions, while the evil Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey) is chomping at the bit in the mushroom planet. The latter returns to Earth with a warrior, Knuckles, who travels the galaxies in search of an emerald of such power that its owner can dominate the universe. The malevolent Robotnik obviously decides to seize it. However, the duo come up against Sonic and his new accomplice, Tails, who has two tails that turn into propellers and allow him to fly. The two acolytes offer a solid opposition to their adversaries, which leads them to live many adventures. In doing so, they gain what they are both looking for: a friend.
Knuckles and Tails add depth to the story. Knuckles, a valiant disciplined warrior, who sincerely believes in his mission, inspires respect thanks to the deep voice of actor Idris Elba. Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who lends her voice to Tails in video games, was the perfect choice to bring the friendly fox to life. They complement Sonic well who benefits a lot from the vocal performance of actor and comedian Ben Schwartz.
Sonic’s adoptive parents, Tom and Maddie, are therefore less present in this second opus. The influence of Tom (James Marsden) remains fundamental, however, since he guides his protege and helps him grow to become the hero he dreams of being. The prize goes once again to Jim Carrey, who gives his all in the role of the deranged genius, ready to do anything to satisfy his delusions of grandeur.
Despite some violent scenes, this film from Paramount Pictures, produced in collaboration with the SEGA Sammy Group, is clearly intended for a family audience (but not for toddlers, on the other hand). Fans of the video game franchise and parents will also find their account.
