Key Highlights

The French box office witnessed Mufasa reigning supreme as it continued its impressive run, having premiered on December 18. This prequel to The Lion King has successfully secured its position at the top for the second consecutive week, benefiting from the holiday season’s viewer surge.

With over 2.5 million attendees, Barry Jenkins’ film has entered the Top 10 of the year’s biggest hits in France. However, it still lags significantly behind the original film’s total, which casts a shadow on its current success.

In a remarkable debut, Sonic 3 jumped to second place, becoming the thirty-third film in 2024 to surpass the million admissions threshold before year-end. This latest adaptation of the beloved Sega franchise outperformed its predecessors, which generally concluded their first weeks with around 750,000 admissions.

While Sonic 3 did not debut during the Christmas holidays, it is positioned well to set a new record for the franchise, with a fourth installment already on the horizon.

On the other hand, Vaiana 2 has already surpassed its predecessor’s performance and crossed the 7 million admissions mark by January 1. Observers speculate that it might even reach the 8 million milestone, potentially rivaling Inside Out 2, which boasted 8,427,652 tickets sold, marking it as the third highest-grossing film of 2024.

The top tier of the box office is significantly ahead, with over 600,000 admissions separating the third-placed Vaiana 2 from the fourth-placed En fanfare. The latter has shown a remarkable +20% increase in admissions compared to the previous week, now standing at a total of 1,609,974 viewers, with the 2 million mark on the horizon.

In the lower ranks, Nosferatu debuted in ninth place, closely trailing Jamais sans mon psy, showcasing a surprisingly strong viewer average akin to Vaiana 2, albeit targeting a different audience. Meanwhile, Wicked is faring reasonably well, with over 700,000 admissions despite its lesser popularity in France compared to the United States.
