After bringing his New Moon theater back to life, creator and impresario Buster Moon dreams of transporting his troupe to the very glam and popular Redshore City to create a great show. To ensure its success, Moon sets out to bring singer Clay Calloway back on stage, reclusive for 15 years.

With the exception of the last act, the main element of which is a spectacle of pharaonic proportions, Song 2 left us with a feeling of deja vu, rehashed, botched animated film and without much originality.
Short, Song 2 is full of false notes.
The world of animated films coming out of the major Hollywood studios is not only vast, but also dotted with several pearls, each of which has lasting memories (Inside Out, Finding Nemo, Wall-E in our case). Why ? For the quality of the image, a strong scenario, a life lesson, and what more!
However, it is all these elements that are missing from this story with the characters of the animal kingdom in which Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) sets out to conquer a city that has all the appearances of Las Vegas and where reigns as king and master the terrifying mogul Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale). While Moon wants to convince former star Clay Calloway (Bono) to return to the stage, Jimmy Crystal forces him to include his daughter Porsha (Halsey) in the troupe. However, Porsha steals the leading role from Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), who is afraid of heights, causing quite a discomfort.
All this is told to us, or rather balanced, in a succession of soft scenes and more or less interesting secondary stories that have little connection between them.
In fact, the binder is the countless songs, originals or covers, among others by U2, Elton John, Billie Eilish, Mercury Rev and others.
Moreover, the structure of the film has the effect that we get little attached to the characters, several of whom pass by in a breeze.
All of that is a shame because the story begins well with a nice opening scene where we stamp our feet in unison while all the main actors of the troupe are introduced one after the other, reminding us of all that diversity is more beautiful.
What saves this film, which is primarily aimed at young people, is its finale. We can say without spilling the beans too much that the threads will eventually all be attached to each other. This scene is grandiose, colorful, catchy. The wide shots and the rotating camera finally make us appreciate all the work that Buster Moon and his band have done to create this large-scale show, starred in music. Hear punk girl character Ash (Scarlett Johansson) sing I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For of U2 gives, for sure, some chills.
