France was relatively spared by the global IT outage on Friday, July 19. But some sectors were affected, such as the IT operations of the Olympic Games organizers.
Can France escape the global IT turbulence? While there is no direct outage to deplore at Aéroports de Paris, there are huge repercussions on traffic. Some companies like Transavia cannot check in baggage. At Marseille airport (Bouches-du-Rhône), five flights were disrupted, two of which were cancelled. In the media sector, several companies are affected: TF1 saw its morning show disrupted, and Le Figaro and Canal+ are affected.
In Paris, accreditations for the Olympic Games and the issuance of uniforms are disrupted. According to Tony Estanguet, “It does not call into question the security of access to critical and essential information” but impacts actions on the ground. Several companies, such as Disneyland Paris, have also suffered disruptions, but overall, France seems less severely shaken. The software concerned is “more widespread in the United States and English-speaking countries than in Europe”explains Benoît Grunemwald, a cybersecurity expert. Some brands like Carrefour were still reporting problems at checkouts at midday linked to the outage.
